On Monday 3rd of June, the LVI English students embarked on a Hamlet study day to Stratford-Upon-Avon for a workshop with the Royal Shakespeare Company and to explore Shakespeare’s life and legacy.
The central focus of our trip was the workshop with the Royal Shakespeare Company, led by Ibraheem; it was especially inspiring for those in our group who also study A Level Drama to learn that he had performed in the RSC's Henry VI as his second professional role upon leaving drama school.
During the workshop, we took part in different activities to enrich our understanding of the play, for instance acting out scenes, reciting monologues, and staging our very own ‘play within a play’. One of the activities I especially enjoyed was acting out the iconic ‘nunnery scene’ with Lettie. Although I’d analysed the scene on paper before, it was only by stepping into Ophelia’s shoes myself that I was able to truly resonate with her thoughts and emotions in that moment, leaving me with a far more intimate understanding of the play as a whole.
We also visited New Place, where the Shakespeare’s Women Exhibition put a spotlight on the lives of women both within the household, but also outside it, in areas such as law, medicine, and writing. It was fascinating to get a glimpse of just how multifaceted the role of a woman was in Shakespeare’s time, and how the women surrounding Shakespeare impacted his portrayal of women in his works.
Our brief visit to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre's tower was the perfect finale. The stunning view of Stratford-Upon-Avon from above was breathtaking and offered a moment of reflection on the town's rich history and its influence on Shakespeare’s writing.
Overall, I greatly enjoyed this trip to Stratford-Upon-Avon. Not only has it left me with a fresh perspective on studying Hamlet, but it has given me a far more personal understanding of Shakespeare’s life and legacy.
