I was initially drawn to this idea when I came across the IVHQ. This international volunteering organisation provides opportunities to volunteer in different specialities all over, even in the most remote areas of the world! As someone who wishes to pursue a career in medicine, I felt it very fitting to volunteer in a clinic in Argentina to not only gain experience, but also to immerse myself in their culture. I then proposed my trip to the Calne Foundation Trust and was shocked to have been awarded the scholarship that covered flight and program costs.
Over the summer for two weeks, I embarked on the most insightful and exhilarating trip, residing in Sarmiento, a province in central Buenos Aires with 4 other girls who were also a part of the various programs offered by the IVHQ. I arrived just in time to witness the city in action for one of Argentina’s biggest events, Copa America! It was amazing to experience first-hand the togetherness of the city and why it got the name ‘The City That Never Sleeps!’
A typical day would begin at my volunteering placement at the clinic in Barracas, run by Head Nun/Nurse - Gladys. The clinic was one of many in the province run by the Catholic Church, aiming to provide free healthcare to the community for accessibility. During my placement my tasks always varied; from sorting pill boxes to patient consultations; there was truly never a dull moment! In the afternoons, I was able to explore the city to my heart’s content, from street markets to theme parks, always ending the day with a conito and late dinner with my roommates. Towards the end of my time in Buenos Aires, I was given the chance to complete a routine check-up on my own. Although quite tricky due to my basic level of Spanish, the patient was very accommodating and was surprised to learn that I’d travelled from England to Argentina all on my own!
I would like to say a huge thank you to the Calne Foundation Trust for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to pursue a childhood dream of travelling and volunteering in Argentina, and I encourage others to take that leap of faith and volunteer this summer to give back to others who are less fortunate.
